About Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic medicine focuses on the health of the spine and its surrounding tissues by facilitating nerve conduction and circulation. This is accomplished by a corrective procedure called an adjustment, which helps the spine and other joints achieve maximum nerve conduction and circulation, proper alignment, range of motion, and optimal function. Chiropractic medicine uses no drugs and may or may not incorporate different therapies, such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation.

At WAY Wellness Center, some chiropractic adjustment techniques may be available as an additional service with your acupuncture treatment plan. These services are only available with Dr. Elizabeth Langer, DC, LAc, as an add-on at the time of service. No chiropractic services are available for booking online or as standalone appointments.

Chiropractic + Acupuncture

Chiropractic is a great complement to acupuncture sessions as a way to get you out of pain and in better health.

Chiropractors are specialists of the neuromusculoskeletal system and are able to diagnose and treat many common ailments. Chiropractors use their hands along with other natural methods to aid you in achieving your treatment goals.

Chiropractic and acupuncture can effectively treat:

  • Pain in back and neck
  • Sprains, strains, and sports-related injuries
  • Tendonitis, bursitis, and “frozen shoulder”
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Nerve entrapments such as sciatica and carpal tunnel
  • Disc herniations and neuropathy
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort
  • Premenstrual and menstrual problems

Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractic techniques help people through a neuromusculoskeletal approach that looks at the whole person. Incorporating chiropractic as an addition to your acupuncture treatment plan emphasizes the use of soft tissue techniques, balancing the nervous system, chiropractic adjustments, and patient education.

Diversified Technique

The Diversified technique is the style most commonly associated with chiropractic. For this method, chiropractors use their hands to adjust you, and you will often hear the famous "cracking" sound.  The "cracking" sound is the release of gas from your joints and does not necessarily signify an adjustment.  Diversified adjustments may sound rough, but they can be very gentle, and relief is often felt immediately.

Activator Adjustment

The Activator method is a low-force form of chiropractic care that uses a handheld spring-loaded device called an activator. This tool delivers a gentle, quick impulse to targeted areas, providing precise and controlled adjustments with minimal discomfort.

This style is perfect for you if you require a lighter approach or have health problems such as osteoporosis or are recovering from a stroke. You may even prefer an adjustment with an activator if you do not like the “cracking” sound.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy can be a non-invasive pain relief treatment that’s based on simple scientific concepts. It offers freedom from the physical, emotional, and financial impact of chronic pain.

Adjunctive procedures, such as trigger point therapy, enhance the effectiveness of the adjustment. Trigger point therapy relieves pain and tension in your muscles by releasing the tight knots commonly referred to as trigger points. Your chiropractor will apply pressure to your trigger points to release the knots and relax your muscles. Adjustments are more effective, gentle, and specific when the muscles are loosened and the knots are worked out.

Sometimes, the work performed on the muscle tissue can be more intense than the actual adjustment. However, muscles recover faster than joints. The less stress the joints have to bear, the more comfortable the adjustment. Trigger point therapy is not a massage, however, many massage therapists will incorporate trigger point therapy into their sessions.

Both chiropractors at WAY Wellness Center use trigger point therapy techniques.

Dr. Joe’s initial training on trigger points was through the NIMMO technique. He has expanded his knowledge and therapeutic applications to develop his own style based on the NIMMO technique. If you would like to learn more about NIMMO and its benefits on trigger points, check out this article from NIMMO Technique.

chiropractic care and your health

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and natural way to relieve pain and improve your health. It uses a procedure called an adjustment – which involves a controlled, sudden force to specific joints, usually in your spine, though it can also be in other parts of the body. There are many different ways for a chiropractor to deliver an adjustment and it depends mainly on your comfort, your health, and the discernment of your chiropractor.

In addition to your adjustment, your chiropractor may provide therapies to further relax your muscles, reduce inflammation, and retrain your body so you can get better faster and prevent future injuries.

Your first adjustment

Depending on your needs, Dr. Langer may recommend a chiropractic adjustment as part of your treatment plan. She will ask about your health history and describe the types of adjustments that may be available.

Your treatment plan

Having a treatment plan is important because it gives you a good idea of where you are and when you can expect to reach certain milestones in your treatment. While every person is different, most people have a good idea of whether a treatment is working in four visits that are scheduled close together (i.e., twice a week for two weeks).

Recovery may be slower if you have a pre-existing condition such as severe neuropathy or have suffered extensive trauma. It is important to communicate with Dr. Langer and let her know how you are responding and recovering after the treatment.

getting the most of treatment

For the best treatment results, keep a few things in mind:

  • Please show up on time.
  • Don’t eat a large meal before your visit.
  • Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns.
  • Refrain from overexertion, drugs, or alcohol for at least six hours after treatment.
  • Follow your treatment plan between visits.
  • Keep all of your appointments as each visit builds upon the previous ones.
  • Communicate and ask questions if you have them.

Your role in the healing process

Did you know that your actions outside of treatment can play a significant role in your recovery? Living a healthy lifestyle is a proactive way to help you feel better faster. Elements that compose a healthy lifestyle may include getting enough rest, eating healthy foods, and making sure that you find an exercise plan that is best for you.

Holistic medicine is not an instant fix

Sometimes, you can get up off the table, and it feels like all your pain melts away. And sometimes not. Depending on your situation, you may require a few weeks or months to achieve the results that you desire. It is important to stay in communication with your practitioner to make sure that you are progressing in a reasonable manner.

Wellness care

Once you get out of pain, the goal is to keep you out of pain. And while you may prefer to wait "until you need it", getting holistic treatment on a regular basis can help you to stay healthy.

If you sit in an office all day, regular appointments can be essential to relieving the tension in your neck and shoulders.

If you work in heavy manual labor, preventative maintenance visits can keep your back strong and flexible, decreasing the chance of getting injured on the job.

Receiving wellness care doesn't have to be a big commitment. Depending on you and your lifestyle, you may only need preventative care every two to six weeks. Talk with your practitioner about a plan that feels right for you.

what is health

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is defined as a "state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Another perspective is that health means living your best life.

There are many ways to achieve health, and regular holistic care offers a gentle and non-invasive alternative that can make your body flexible and strong, while clearing your mind and helping you to remain calm and centered.

Maintaining wellness

Once you start to feel good, you will be presented with two options. The first is to come back when you need to. And there is nothing wrong with that. The second, however, takes a more preventative approach.

When you choose wellness care, you are not only making sure your spine is moving correctly, and your nervous system is functioning at its peak, but you also have the opportunity to explore other avenues, such as exercise or meditation, that could further expand upon your current health and take it to the next level.

Planning for a healthy future

Did you ever see someone in their eighties complete a triathlon? Or even come across a group of seniors in a Tai Chi class? In addition to being vibrant and healthy, they are disciplined and focused on their wellness journey.

If you want this to be you, please know that being healthy and active into your twilight years is perfectly attainable. Regular wellness care can help you get there by keeping your body strong and flexible and keeping your nervous system working at its optimal level. Making your health a priority can help you to enjoy every aspect of your life.
